Why Are You Weeping?

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—this Jesus,delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God,you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.    Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. 

   Now from [noon until three] there was darkness all over the land. And about [three in the afternoon] Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

   And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said,“Truly this was the Son of God!”

Take Heart...

Today is last supper day. Right before he is handed away, Jesus held Passover, instituted communion, and WASHES his disciples' feet (john 13-17).

As I read over today's passage, I thought that I would share just a few verses that the Lord pointed out to me.

"By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:12)

"If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me." (John 14:23-24)

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (John 15:8)

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12)

"In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 15:33b)

These are Jesus' last words to his disciples. And what stands out to me is that he is concerned about how they behave. It's almost like listening to the dying wishes or the will of a family member: we are so willing to do what they wanted because it was the last thing they said as they knew their time was ending. Jesus warns his disciples that behaving in obedience to him would cost them acceptance, just as it did Him. But, right before he prays for them (and us) in chapter 17, He reminds us that he has already overcome the world. 

I think with all that is going on this week, we should remember Jesus' final prayer for us. He says,

 "I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth."

In this last day before we commemorate Jesus' sacrifice, let's we examine our hearts and consider his last will and testament: that we love one another to set ourselves apart, and that we obey his word. It may be difficult or uncomfortable to take the side of truth sometimes, but take heart: he has overcome the world! A special dinner may be in order as we celebrate what God did for the Israelites, and what He has done for us. 

The End of Judas' Story

This is the third of a week long reflection on Jesus' sacrifice. Join me tomorrow for more Passion Week Reflections.

Today is a day when Jesus was quiet. He spent time with friends and family in Bethany. Imagine what he was going through, knowing what was to come for him in the days to follow. You could also call this "spy day", because Judas contracts as a spy. Jesus pointed out that Judas would be the betrayer tomorrow, but isn't it interesting that this is the day that he gave Jesus over? His action set the most important weekend in history into motion. 

We are hard on old Judas, but I have to stand up for him. Peter denied Jesus three times, and we remember that, but what we REALLY remember is that he is the rock on which the church was built (though interpretation of that varies from denomination to denomination!). All I'm saying is, Peter allowed God to continue His good work, but Judas gave up by hanging himself. Haven't you ever committed an "unforgivable" sin? One that you thought no one would ever be able to forgive you of? I know I have. I've been mean to people who didn't deserve it, I've betrayed friends in my own interest, and I've been selfish and judgmental. And what was Judas but selfish? No, I never sold out my savior, but we know the end of the story. If Judas had known the whole story, I have to believe he would have stuck it out. Jesus paid for his sin, just like ours. And no one is beyond redemption, as the entire story of God's people (the Bible) has reminded us again and again. The Lord is faithful and just to forgive and he will finish his good work in those who love him. Judas never gave him a chance to redeem. 

Please be Peter, and not Judas. God created us, in HIS image and for HIS purpose, but we all have sinned and fallen short of what He expects of us. And since the cost of living a sinful life is death and separation from God for eternity, we're all lined up like sheep headed to the slaughter. But there is hope! "For God so loved the world" that he sent his Son to bear the weight of the world's sin, bridge the gap between God and us, and bless us with the free gift of eternal life. All we need to do is earnestly repent of our sins, believe in Jesus and confess it with your mouth and call on the name of the Lord. 

Jesus became the perfect sacrifice just a little while after Judas had given up. He beat death! The Bible tells us that if you come to God, he won't turn you away (John 6:37). This week is a memorial of his work on the Cross. And Judas, and you, and I are all unworthy of his sacrifice. But he loved us enough that He died. Our response should be gratitude in the form of obedience. It is not too late, and you have not gone too far to become a child of the King.

Authority

After all the ruckus Jesus caused in the temple yesterday, the religious leaders of the day wanted to know what gave him the right to do what he did. (Matt 21:23-27). Then he taught in the temple and sparred with the leaders (Matt 21:28-25:46).

Jesus' response to the question of the source of his authority was to ask the leaders another question: from  where did the authority of John's baptism come? The leaders were in a conundrum. They couldn't say from heaven, because it would make them look bad. He pointed to Jesus as the Messiah and they had not listened to him. But if they said from man, they would face a potential riot because John was recognized as a prophet and respected by the masses. 

The chief priests and elders made the same mistake that many of us make when faced with Jesus. We are hesitant to admit the truth about him, that he truly is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29), but we don't want to insult him by saying that he was anything less than a "good teacher". The popular argument is that Jesus was either Lord, a liar, or a plain lunatic. No one would get away with saying or doing the things Jesus did without being a complete fraud or just plain crazy... unless he was telling the truth. If he's a liar or a lunatic, why even bother calling yourself a Christian? And if liar and lunatic don't fit the bill, the Lord must be the answer. Why? Because that makes all he proclaimed the truth.

The ultimate answer of the leaders was, "We don't know". And I have to believe Jesus was a little snarky in answering them: "Well.. if you don't know, neither do I" (my paraphrase of course!). I think Jesus was making a point: you're acting like you don't know, but you do; two can play at that game! 

So where are we? Jesus is Lord and his authority comes from God (Matt 28). That's not an easy conclusion to draw, though, because it has some serious implications. If he is Lord, as he claims, then he must carry authority as a Lord. That means, we ought to do what he says. This is especially true in light of the sacrifice he made. The disciples and the chief priests and elders did not have history to reflect upon, but we do. We know the result of his death and resurrection, and there are hundreds of theologians who can describe its implications for us. 

On this day of controversy, read his final teachings to the leaders and his wondering disciples (Matt. 21:23-25:46). Who do you think Jesus is, and where does he get his authority? Do you truly believe that he is Messiah? Savior? God? And have you been acting like you believe it? Let us choose this day whom we will serve, and do it wholeheartedly. 

Temple Cleansing

Today is Temple Cleansing Day (Mark 11:15-19).

This morning I read Malachi 3:1-9. The temple was to be called a house of prayer for all people (Isa. 56:7), but instead he found tables set up in the outer courts, exchanging currencies (probably at outrageous rates) for the temple tax and selling items needs for the various sacrifices (see Leviticus for more about that!). He came as "refiner and purifier" to those who were robbing the Lord by creating a financial barrier between God and his people. Not only that, but the outer court was the only place where Gentiles could worship and pray to the God of Israel. He also curses a fig tree, which had no fruit but was full of leaves (like fig trees do when they're ready to bear fruit).

Perhaps my temple, that was made for God's glory and HIS purposes, is in need of some cleansing. I am quick to call myself a Christian, Jesus lover, Christ follower -- but what about me is unpleasing to Him or unnecessary for his purposes? I won't speak for anyone else, but I have to say that I have lots of barriers between my world and the Kingdom of God. Is blogging in the way, or Facebook? What's the first thing I reach for in the morning, my phone or my Bible? Why do I do the things I do?

If I'm honest, I'm treating much of my life as my own. Much of what I do is fueled by self-interest. Paul says "if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live" (Rom 8:13). But praise God, he has paid the price for me to have the rights of an heir! There is NO condemnation for those who are in Christ (v. 1). Does that mean go on sinning, never trying to improve or change? Of course not! I am not longer a slave to sin, should I continue on under its power? Jesus was lead like a lamb to the slaughter so that I would not have to live as a slave to the sinful nature. And the proper way to show my gratitude is to do what HE has asked me to do.

The truth is that obedience is imperative in the lives of Christ followers. So you believe in God? Awesome. Even demons believe in God. Because he is real. So what is setting you apart from the demons? Who is your master? Are we fig trees full of leaves but lacking the fruit of obedience? Let's use today to "cleanse" our temples.. What needs to be confessed and repented for in our lives?

Spring ball is not enough. But unhindered joy awaits me on the other side of the March madness. ::sigh:: 

P.S. I have been a Giants fan my WHOLE. LIFE. I don't mind the bandwagoners though, the more the merrier. And when they drop off the bandwagon and we have another quiet season, I'll be here waiting for them to return. Because we always come back.

Together, we are GIANT.

Ok anyway. Back to the regularly scheduled activities. I'm linking up with Mama M for Five Question Friday. She was kicking some serious questions over here. I hope y'all stick around for my long winded answers lol! Always a good time :)




1. What advice would you give a newly married couple?
Be quick to apologize and quick to forgive. I think that about sums it up!

Seriously though. The most important thing to remember is to communicate! With each other and with the Lord. I mean, this is our biggest hang up. When the Sarge is grumpy, my mind always makes it something I did. Or, when I'm mad and I think silence is telling him everything he needs to know... I'm being immature and often petty. When we talk to each other, most of our "problems" dissipate because they weren't problems at all (just PERCEIVED problems). So talk! Talk to each other every day, about more than what bills are due or what's for dinner. Chit chat. Joke together. And when you're upset, TALK. And if it's an argument, fight fair. And when you can't see eye to eye, talk to Jesus. He'll put you in your place.

A second thing I'd say for us ladies is NEVER down talk your hubby to anyone, ever. Not even him. Not even your mom. Not even your BFF. Not even your sister. Not in public, not in private, NEVER. It is damaging to you (and him if he ever finds out, and then you again). Don't do it. 

2. Who does more laundry around your house?
Me! Sergeant J will do it when he feels like I'm slacking, so... never.

3. What items, if any, do you prefer to buy organic or make yourself?
I TRY to stick to the dirty dozen when budget is an issue (I don't always) -- that is apples, cucumbers, potatoes, celery, bell peppers, berries, peaches & nectarines, spinach, grapes, and lettuce (did I miss something?) but when I don't have budget as a concern I buy organic food boxes which are 100% local and organic. The main reasons are that I prefer to buy locally, organic produce is often more flavorful, and non organic produce seems to be HUGE (in size) which creeps me out and the fruit never really smells like... well... the fruit. I'm not obsessive about it, but I do choose organic when I can. When the Sarge is gone, I'll be eating only local, organic produce as part of a largely vegetarian diet. I will eat organic chicken and grass fed beef occasionally because cooking for one allows me that kind of flexibility and let's be honest.. I'm an omnivore. 

AS for homemade. We've pretty much nixed all canned goods with the exception of tomato products and Rotel (which, I guess is also a tomato product). I don't think ALL canned foods are bad but I don't like studying labels so I just skip that section. I make cream soup bases when a recipe calls for cream of "...". I believe in WHOLE, full fat varieties of all food. Then, if I can only have a handful of something, at least it's a tasty handful! I make all of our bread (hot dog and hamburger buns included!) partially because I am creeped out that it takes store-bought bread a month to mold, and partially because I just like making bread. Everything in my house is homemade, from scratch (except sausages and pepperoni). The only ingredients I buy are base ingredients or items with 2-5 ingredients (like butter, pasta, etc.). Occasionally I do buy tortilla chips, but I make our salsa and guacamole. I might buy Ritz crackers when I'm feeling feisty but that's about once a year.

I don't talk about it much (I don't think I do anyway) but I prefer life this way for now. Will I ever change? I'm open to it as I know things change when you have kids, etc. But, my hormones are out of balance so I'm picky about hormonal meat. Also, blood pressure is an issue in the Black community so I want more control over what goes into our bodies. So there's my abridged discourse on "clean" eating. 


4. What book/TV series would you recommend for a friend on bedrest?
TV: How I Met Your Mother, Breaking Bad, and Duck Dynasty reruns! I have never been much a TV show person, but recently the Sarge and I have found some fun stuff on television. I'm saving up a bunch of shows to watch on Netflix while he's deployed so pretty soon I'm going to be as saturated as anyone else. Oh well! 

And books, well, honestly I would recommend anything from Beth Moore or Jen Hatmaker. In fact, if you're on bedrest, how about ALL of Beth Moore and Jen Hatmaker? Just saying. Also, Redeeming Love (I know, I'm late) is a fantastic read. I've read lots of books that I thought were worth reading (One Day, the Emily Griffin "Something Borrowed" saga, Beautiful Creatures and any Twilight book, The Time Traveler's Wife, The Hunger Games trilogy, Diary of a Mad Fat Girl, pretty much all of the Sookie Stackhouse books, yes, even the Fifties.....) but most of my best books have been from curiosity and browsing the 3.99 and under section of NOOKbooks. So that's what I would recommend. Read all the $.99 books and a couple $2.99ers or so, and you'll read your way right out of that bed!

5. So, they say it's Spring now...what does your "spring" look like at this very moment?
It's 51 degrees and clear in Central Florida -- perfect for me. But give it a few hours. I'm sure it will be 85 degrees before long!

... that I did my couch 2 5k deal once this week instead of three times. The humidity is hard on me! ^_^

... to avoid Netflix like the plague because I want to have PLENTY to watch while the Sarge is gone.

... that we haven't found a church yet. I'm not stressed out at all. It was confirmed to us that churches are a bit tougher to break into here. It's okay that the nicest church we have been to is the only one without a pastor where, by the way, we were the only dark faces. And that of the 5 we have visited, more people there spoke to us than any of the other four combined. NBD. Part of me wants to join all of them and school them, but that's not my calling here. Yet. But if you are a church goer in Central Florida.. be nicer to your visitors. Seriously.

... that one trip to Disney should cover me for ... oh, I dunno.. ever.

... that I can't seem to wake up before 10am, barely in time to make the Sarge his lunch. Apparently I forgot what it was like to not have work or school (or a clean house). So much for giving the at-homers a good name! Good thing I don't have kids. Better straighten that up "dreckly".

... that so far, me and Gracie only have one friend in ALL of Florida -- our neighbor. Probably because of that 10am thing. Don't judge.

Where dreams come true.

Here are some pictures from "the happiest place on earth".  Sergeant J was able to take two days off this week, as he gets no pre-deployment leave (lame). Hopefully we'll get a couple more days together before he has to leave me. But back to Disney. There were a LOT of Arkansans there so the Sarge was happy all day. The crowds were minimal and it wasn't that hot. It was great. We did two parks. We might do one more next month if we can. Anything's possible when it's free. :)

Enjoy my camera phone pictures. Maybe for a real vacation I'll carry around one of those schmancy cameras like EVERY mom had. (Eye roll... but I do want a camera that doesn't receive phone calls one day soon lol.)  

And P.S. I found out how many Disney movies the Sarge has NOT seen. Do I smell a themed care package? I think I do.

Floored.

Would you look at this?

I LIVE HERE. Okay well not technically. It's about 45 minutes up the road but I PRACTICALLY LIVE HERE! It's God's grace. It makes no sense that we move from one ocean to the other when I love the ocean as much as I do. Maybe this is not everyone's idea of paradise, but it is mine. Sigh. 

We went to Cape Canaveral yesterday and I just had to share that (instagram) photo. That's real life, a real place you can go, not a joke, not far away, not photoshopped. God floors me every time I think about it. 

Today's Top Two Tuesday topic is random fact about me. Last time I let you guys know that I took 4 years of French and 8 of piano and my skill in both were lacking, and then about how much I love the grocery store. But, I'm random by nature so it will be easy to do two more.

1. I am not a fan of the Disney... Well, to be clear, that would be Disneyland or World. I say that because we're going there today, as the Sarge has never been. I'm not sure I love the company but I know I don't love the theme parks. Living so close to Disney World, though, we got some tickets on the low low (like, the free low) and are braving Disney. This is a good time of year to do it. But Disney forces four things on me that I don't tolerate well :: 1. People forcing their tired (or just plain irritating) kids to do things they're not fond of (think the pics of kids sobbing while Mickey is giving the peace sign). :: 2. People who hate their jobs and/or said kids who have to fake it and fail miserably. :: 3. Crowds. I have terrible anxiety but that is the reason we're going now (and in the middle of the week). and 4. RUDE PEOPLE. Vacationing people are hands down the rudest people I have ever met, and that goes for just about anywhere. and 5. overpriced snacks, but that's not their fault... it's consumerism lol. And no, I'm not a cynic. Not really. I just know what I like and what stresses me out. So, say a little prayer for me that I don't have a psychotic break. At least I don't have kids. (whew).

And now that I don't have any more readers....

2. I make all our bread. There's a neutral random fact if there ever was one. You may find the occasional french loaf if I'm making bruschetta for a crowd, but for the most part, I craft all our bread. Sometimes, we don't eat much bread because it's a hundred thirty-seven degrees in Florida and the last thing I want is an oven on, but it stands. No grocery store carbs for us. (at least not in the form of bread. but that's beside the point.)

Why didn't anyone tell me?

Why didn't y'all tell me that $30 (ish), a final decision and a hammer were all that were keeping me from giving my room a new life????

I AM SO EXCITED!!

Let's be honest. I'm excited by a lot of things these days. But what can I say... life is so good right now :)

1. What is one thing you wish you did not have to teach your children?
I don't have children. I haven't really thought about this, but one of my friends has. She has two small kiddos and her little girl is the most outgoing and sweet girl I have ever met. But last year, she experienced some bullying. I think it's such a bummer that some kids just aren't going to get along... some kids really have no home training and the reality is, some kids are raised with different values. That was hard to watch them go through. I wish people could just get along or stay away from each other but we all have to live in this world together. You can't be friends with everyone while still staying true to yourself. And even though it's hard, it is a valuable lesson for her.(Hopefully one that she won't have to learn too many times!)

2. What are you going to use since Google Reader is going away?
I'm using Feedly as I mentioned yesterday! I did finally sign up for Bloglovin' since SO many people seem to be going there, but I like the Feedly interface much MUCH more.

3. British comedy; Hilarious or strange?
Well, I haven't watched any British comedy. But I think it would be unfair to call it strange because there's a different culture. If that weren't the case, they wouldn't have to take the UK version of The Office and create a US version. So.. I'm going to hilarious. To some people.

4. Do you prefer card games or board games?
I don't know many card games, but my favorite game is Spades. I haven't played many board games either so I feel like I'm completely unqualified to answer this question! Does Taboo count as a board game? I like games like that.. Apple to Apples, Cranium.. and so on. So whatever those are, they win.

5. Will winter ever end?
It's OVER here in Florida (if there ever was one) but for now the weather is pleasant. I'm trying to enjoy it before it gets nasty. I'm not sure when it happens, but I know it's going to happen. We've already had a glimpse of the 89 degree and humid weather (in January) so I hope winter (or.. more mild) weather NEVER stops lol!!

First of all.. GOOGLE READER! Why must you leave?? Makes me so sad. Just as I'm catching up on all the friends, Google decides to pull the rug right from under my feet. 

Well, it's okay... because I was referred to Feedly and I really like it!! It's got a clean, fluid design and a gnarly android app. I haven't put it on the iPad yet, but I have to assume the iOS app is pretty sweet too. They're even facilitating "limited time" seamless transitions for us Google orphans. Check it out once you get over your mourning like I had to do :)

Anyway, back to Thursday. I'm excited this Thursday because we just made plans for a Disney World day trip. I don't love Disney, but I do love seeing the Sarge's excitement about Buzz Lightyear (LOL). We're trying to go before all you crazy tourists get here. 

And it's okay that I am being a total heifer this week, even though I need to get in gear because my parents will be here in a month and we still have to paint the bathroom and buy new bed dressings!! But I am not freaking out AT ALL [even though I'm being lazy].

It's okay that I JUST discovered NARS Taj Majal which is like the black girl's Orgasm (the blush haha).

Also, it's official. Sergeant J is being deployed. Lame. 

BUT it's okay.... it's part of the job description! And on the bright side, that gives me plenty of time for rabbit eating and saving up for Italy. YES. Italy. We're planning to go to ITALY for 3 weeks to celebrate our 5 year anniversary (next December). The BAD news is we might have to PCS (move) next summer or fall, which would put a small wrench in our plans. But Italy! I DIE!!

Top Two Tuesday

Hi friends. Way back when I started blogging, there was a gal named Tay who had a blog that hosted Top 2 Tuesday. It was a linky, similar to ... well ... any other blog hop you've ever seen. It was one of my favorite hops because it was a quick post. So... since Tay is gone (or at least only available to private readers), I'm going to revive it here. I must say.. if the original ever comes back, I will concede. But until then, here's the first happy life blog Top Two Tuesday! 


P.S. Y'all would totally judge me about how long I worked on this little image and this blog post. I finally gave up on what I wanted it to look like and just posted the last attempt. I am so lame. Who here is a graphic designer and wants to help me?? :))

Top 2 Dream Rooms

The first one is of course an amazing entertaining kitchen, where I could cook and store every gadget and have plenty of room for all the friends. I would love this kitchen with all my little heart. The light cabinets. The ceiling. The lighting. I die!!

And then I would love a home office for Perfectly Posh and crafting... preferably furnished by Pottery Barn of course! We have a room that will be my office but right now it's a storage space. (very sad face.) Perhaps before this summer, I'll have a proper office! I love this simple table and the elegant decor. I even kind of dig that chair!
